NOC ~ Not Our Cat!
Ok, I love my mom. Actually I adore her. But man sometimes I just have to laugh at her. Over a year ago when I still lived with my parents this neighborhood cat started sneaking into our house. We could not open a door without this black cat running in. Hey we like cats, it was fine. But slowly this cat moved in. She really likes us. Even now when I go over there and spend the night she sleeps on either my chest or my neck/head. After a while my parents broke down and started feeding her. Our dog would play with her. Our other cat got tired of chasing her out of the house and let her be. To me it became our cat. So in November (Over a year and a couple of months after this cat showed up and adopted us.) I spent a week at my parents and my mom told me to get up and let the cat in because she was knocking. I go 'Mom, we really need to name the cat.' My mom replies calmly with 'Well we can't, she's not our cat.' I argued with her over that because
1.) She has been in our house for at least part of the day, everyday, for over a year.
2.) We feed her.
3.) We let her sleep on our heads!
4.) The dog lets her sleep on top of her!
5.) When she goes outside and wants back in she bats the screen door and 'Knocks' until we open the door.
6.) When she 'knocks' in the middle of the night someone wakes up, gets out of bed, and lets her inside.
7.) Her old owner (our neighbor) died.
8.) She has her own 'space' where we feed her so the other animals don't steal her food.
9.) That cat has obviously adopted us whether we wanted her to or not.
This is our cat! But noooo my mom goes off with 'I promised Poppy (our other cat) that we wouldn't get a new cat until she dies.' (She's twenty year old in people years.) Ok mom then why do we have a cat living here? 'We don't' What???? Denial, Denial, Denial! So we argued over whether she was our cat for over a month. I must of heard 'She's not our cat!' at least 200 to 300 times. We would have entire phone conversation about this. We argued about it on Christmas for Pete's sake! While the cat was sleeping on top of our dog! When I would call her she would pick up the phone with 'Not our cat.' My mom is a very stubborn woman.
So over New Years I spent another few days over there and decided that I was going to call her NOC. (Pronounced Knock) One reason is because she 'knocks' on our front door. But mostly I just thought of it as a compromise with my mom. NOC - Not Our Cat. We would both be happy. So I thought. My mom refused. I managed to get my sister and stepdad calling this cat NOC but not my mom. GAH!
Then last night my sister and I go over there to steal toilet paper. (hey what else are parents for?) We walk in and my mom says cheerfully 'Hey we should name the cat.' *Bangs head repeatedly against wall* Apparently she was in the middle of telling my stepdad to get the cat a new food dish when she saw the light and realized that yes this is our cat.
She is still refusing the name Noc though.
I really do love my mom. Really. Its not her fault that she has the power to drive me absolutely bat-crazy.
